PiYo Halfway Results

Here are my results for half of PiYo (4 weeks): 1/2″ gone from my bust, 1/2″ gone from my waist, 1.5″ gone around my bellybutton, 1.5″ gone from my hips, 1/2″ gone from each thigh, 4.3 pounds lost! I can hold a downward facing dog pose for longer than ever, and that’s with my heels nearly on the floor! I’ve gained better posture and flexibility, and I feel fantastic after every workout.

Low back pain has been an issue for me since I was just 13 years old (that was the first time I was laid out with pain for a few days). The last time I had physical therapy was in June/July of 2015, and I have kept up with the stretches and core exercises that the physical therapist recommended for my particular issues (moderate degeneration in L3-L5 that causes the vertebrae to shift a little, causing muscle spasms). The first day of PiYo is Align: The Fundamentals, which is a 40 minute light workout where proper alignment is demonstrated for all of the poses used in PiYo. I was delighted to find out many of the poses are the very same ones recommended by my physical therapist for my back pain!

PiYo flows through a variety of Pilates and yoga exercises and includes plenty of pushups, squats, planks, sumo burpees (which are actually doable for me, unlike regular burpees), and poses that increase both flexibility and strength at the same time. There are 6 workouts/week that range from 20-40 minutes each. I haven’t been following the PiYo food plan since I’m doing this whole AIP thing, but I’ve looked at it and it’s pretty awesome. The plan breaks food into 5 groups (primary vegetables, secondary vegetables & grains, fruits, lean protein, and healthy fats), and tells you how many servings of each group to eat based on your goals (get lean or maintain). The breakdown is similar to the 21 Day Fix breakdown and will have you loaded up on lean proteins, nutrient rich vegetables, healthy fats, and whole fruits. Today begins Week 5 and I’m excited to see what PiYo can do for me over the next 4 weeks.
